SmartSantander:

Abstract: The SmartSantander project aims at the creation of an experimental test facility for the research and experimentation of architectures, key enabling technologies, services and applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) in an urban landscape. The testbed is conceived as an essential instrument to achieve the European leadership on key enabling technologies for IoT, and to provide the European research community with a unique platform of its characteristics, suitable for large scale experimentation and evaluation of IoT concepts under real-life conditions. The project has deployed 10,000 devices so far in the city of Santander and its surroundings encompassing different application areas of the city infrastructure ranging from public transport, key logistics facilities such as harbour and waste management, public places and buildings, work places and residential areas, thus creating the basis for development of a real Smart City. An overview of the process and the achievements of the project will be outlined in this talk.

Biography: José M. Hernández-Muñoz received his Master's degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Madrid (Politécnica) in 1987. In 1985 worked for Alpes Ingenieros S.A. and in 1988 with the Center for Technological and Industrial Development of the Spanish Government. He joined Telefonica I+D in 1990, getting involved in several EU funded projects. In 1998 he took part in the management of TID's Innovation Plan (1998-2001), and coordinated TID participation on several European Programs (IST, Eureka, COST, Telematics, etc.). He was appointed Head of Division in 2001. He has been Secretary of the Permanent Committee on Networks & Services of AHCIET, and representative for Telefonica at the W3C. He is author of over thirty articles and contributions to international magazines and symposiums, and has been granted four patents. He was co-founder of a successful technological start-up in 2000 and associated professor in the Telematics Engineering Department of the Carlos III University of Madrid (2002-2007). Nowadays he coordinates the SmartSantander project (INFSO-CT-257992) within Telefonica R&D.
