Message from the Workshop Chairs
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of the workshop on Enabling Technologies and Standards for Wireless Mesh Networking.
As you well know, wireless mesh networks are emerging as a key technology for the next generation of wireless networking, because they allow for easy and fast, highly scalable, reliable and cost-effective network deployment under very diverse environments, and they also provide better coverage and capacity to stationary and mobile users. As a consequence, wireless mesh networks are currently inspiring a lot of research activities and are also being rapidly deployed in many of today’s environments, such as public city-wide broadband WiFi networks, rural networks, or private neighbourhood communities. However, there is still a lack of reference standard specifications for developing interoperable mesh networking technology, though we should mention that several standardization bodies, including both the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN standards committee and the IETF, have recently started working on this. The goal of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion on the recent advances in theory, application and implementation of next generation mobile mesh/multi-hop relay networking technologies within the context of existing and/or emerging standards. We hope this will help all of us to perceive what technical solutions will be able to drive the success of these standardization efforts, and what kind of mesh networking products will appear on the market in the near future.
Despite being the first edition, we were really pleased to receive a total number of 33 papers from all five continents. This showed how widespread interest is in this topic among the international community. All the papers underwent a rigorous review process, which entailed each paper being revised by at least three members of the Program Committee. As a result of these reviews and the discussion among the workshop chairs, 12 papers were finally accepted, and we are really sorry that, because this is only a one-day workshop, several promising papers could not be accommodated. However, we are delighted to tell you that there will be a keynote speech from Donald E. Eastlake 3rd, from Motorola, who is currently chairing the IEEE 802.11 Mesh Networking Task Group.
We would like to thank all the authors who honoured MeshTech 2007 by submitting papers to the workshop. Our next thanks go to the Program Committee members and the external reviewers, for their invaluable work and responsiveness under really tight deadlines. Finally, we would like to thank the MASS 2007 workshops chairs Luciano Bononi and Archan Misra, for giving us the opportunity to organize this workshop, and also the rest of the MASS organization committee, in particular the general chair Marco Conti, for all their help and suggestions.
